Dads: Feeling left out? This Father’s Day, hear from a guy who’s been there.
Dear Dad who isn’t the favorite (right now),
So, a few years back, my son brings this drawing home from preschool. It’s labeled “My Favorite Things.” And his were… French Fries. Garbage Truck. Mommy. … Yeah. Just Mommy.
What the hell, man? What about Daddy? From the moment he was born, I was all in. I did diaper duty and story time and bath time and skin-to skin. But as soon as he could walk — and then talk — it was always her. Only Mommy could tie his shoes. Only Mommy could get his juice. Only Mommy could make it better.
Sometimes, when he’d call for her, I’d be like, “Dude, I’m right here. And I am more than capable of filling your sippy cup.”
But you know what? I never stopped trying. Never stopped being there, offering to refill that sippy cup.
And then, one night, when mom was putting him to bed, guess who he asked to read him a bedtime story? This guy.
I know, it sucks being second string. But someday, I promise, it will be your turn.
