Feel like you haven’t slept in years? This Mother’s Day, hear from a mom who’s been there.
Sometimes when you haven’t slept in days and weeks and months, it’s hard to feel like you exist anywhere.
I remember a particular day when I reached my breaking point. My youngest was only a few months old and I had been up with her the entire night. The next morning when my four-year-old son asked me to tie his shoe, I physically couldn’t. My body was that wrecked. He was due at school within the hour, and you know what? I didn’t trust myself to drive a car.
And so I unpacked his backpack, turned on the TV, and cried. Because you know what? Sometimes crying is all you can do. And that’s okay. Because one day you’ll wake up in the middle of the night and you’ll realize it’s light out. I mean, like, it’s daylight out and you’ll be like, what the f*#!? Did I just sleep through the entire night? Yeah, you did!
And honestly, there will be a time, I promise you, when you’ll look back on all of this and miss it deeply and profoundly.
You’ll actually miss the early days of sleeplessness and brainlessness and babyness. And yeah, that is easy for me to say, I sleep throughout the night most of these days, but soon enough, so will you.
