Does Your Baby Need Vitamin or Mineral Supplements?
Parents often ask whether their babies need vitamin or mineral supplements. The answer is that there are some babies in the U.S. today who are low in vitamin D and/or low in iron. The reason for this is probably because we used to get vitamin D from the sun. But as a culture, we spend so much more time indoors and when we are outside, we need to wear sunscreen.
And, we’ve changed the way babies are delivered. It used to be for most of human history that babies got extra blood in the seconds and minutes after the baby was delivered, which contained lots of iron. Today, people often rush to clamp and cut the cord. So, the answer is yes, some babies do need extra vitamin D and iron. Talk with your pediatrician to find out if your baby is likely to be one of those.
